Chapter Seventeen

Shay spoke into his radio and Annie wondered how he could remain so calm and cold after what had just happened.

The rumors about him being an emotionless and fearless man appeared to be true, but she suspected some of it might be a front and that he was just as vulnerable as the rest of them.

After all, she’d seen his guard come down when he’d been with Stork, and she wondered if he’d learned the hard way how to hide behind a mask, something she would have to develop one day if she was to keep her sanity out here.

“A bird will come ‘n pick up the tangos,” he said after he’d ended the transmission. “Okay, let’s put this fucked-up place behind us.”

His words were followed by a low and heartfelt ‘rah’ from the men.

“Fire team one, on me,” and Shay boosted himself up and over the top of the wall. He rose to his feet, crouched to reduce his profile, moved forward a few paces then gestured with two fingers for Williams, Lowell and Webber to follow.

Annie watched wide-eyed as the four men began to move at a slow and disciplined pace along the edge of the raised bank. They walked heel to toe, rifles held at high ready, each man stepping in the footsteps of the one in front of him, their heads on swivels as they surveyed their surroundings for the enemy and the ground for IEDs and anti-personnel mines.

She locked her gaze onto Shay and her body stiffened with tension. The farther he moved away from the relative safety of the trench, the more the danger increased, and she wanted to call out to him to come back.

By the time the fire team had reached halfway, her nerves were at a breaking point. They screamed in protest and her muscles became as taut as whipcord.

If the men were attacked now, there would be nowhere for them to run or hide. If they had to retrace their route, it would take just as long to come back as to go forward. Whichever direction they chose, they would still be easy targets and could be picked off one by one.

She didn’t want that to happen to Shay or anyone else in Delta. If he was injured or—in a worst-case scenario, a situation she couldn’t abide thinking about—killed, it would affect her more than she cared to admit.

What had happened on the mission had emphasized the fact that life was too short. Each moment needed to be lived to the fullest.

The dangerous situation they found themselves in had reinforced the pull of attraction she felt for Shay, and while she was aware that insta-lust-love existed for some, she was fighting an internal battle against the thought that it had happened to her.

Thinking about him like this is a one-way trip to getting my ass shot off.

“Okay,” Sergeant Johnson said, tugging her back from her inappropriate thoughts. “Fire team two, you’re up.”

Sergeant Miller took his place at the wall and, slinging his rifle, he jumped and heaved himself over the lip.
